4. Experience versus Newbie
職場上最容易遇到的衝突便是老鳥與菜鳥的觀念牴觸或是行事風格相異,而在申請到德國Buyer實習商業諮詢的相關業務時,從中發現到年輕人雖然在資歷上的確少了很多年,但是因為有快速分析與更新知識的能力,所以容易比資深同事更具有想像力。這一次讓他知道說,多多和不同年齡層的人一起共事,都可以獲得意想不到的收穫,在老手與新手間的摩擦都能為企業帶來更新及進步。
做為一個學生,偶爾也會有老手新手的迷思出現,因為在大學前,台灣學生基本上都接受了滿滿的知識填充,在歷經嚴峻的大考或各種甄試擠進自己的志願大學。我們其實容易因為自己在以前的社團經歷、營隊經驗或在校成績不小心沾沾自喜,這時就很像是一個覺得歷經風霜經驗值超標的職場老手心態;但事實是,求學路上或職場上絕對沒有頂端,我們必須一直一直往前汲取新的能力,讓自己更好,才能不斷有競爭力與動力不被淘汰。
其實每到一個新領域,不論年紀大家都是新手,我們因為經歷比較少,最容易有很多的發揮空間,不被侷限住,可是我們在成為老手時又會不小心有上面的行為出現。在學生時期就可以多和不同專長或領域的人交往、認識,從經驗豐富的學長姊身上學習到不同看世界的角度,也在當學長姊後從學弟妹身上看到新的世代嶄新的能力或觀點。
5.Barriers for good decision making: ego, blind spot
回到Jerry 本身的職業,身為投資者與創業者最容易有身為老闆放不下的自尊或是一些盲點,其實不是只有在職場上會有,我們自己在學習課業的過程中也時常出現這些狀況:不好意思老師、同學比較難或不會的題目;覺得自做+的作品很完美,其實有些缺點或是可以改進的地方需要局外人來點出……
因此第五個心法沒有很深遠厲害的學經歷或是大道理作為背書,只是希望我們在這個快速變動、進步的時代可以用謙虛的心態去面對不同專長領域的人才,以及將自己當成空杯子去盛裝知識的水源,這是在創投業擁有豐富經歷的Jerry深深體會到的。
我認為第5個跟第1個有異曲同工之妙,都是希望我們可以開拓更大的眼界去接觸世界。只是第一個希望我們主動往前,而這個心法希望我們可以挖空自己,去裝滿更多更多的東西。其實這也很像是跨領域想要我們做的,我在自己本來的領域中一定會有先前經驗作為背景,當然會做得很好,但因為做得太熟練容易有盲點或繞在相同的迴路出不來;可是在跨到另一個陌生領域時,常常因為自尊或是不好意思,不願意面對挫折或困難,這兩個情境若是拋開自己以為的自尊,都可以讓更專業或更有經驗的人幫我們找出缺點,讓自己更好。
6. Risk versus reward
在加州Mucker Capital工作,並且開始大量接觸創投,也培育了好多家新創公司,人說投資最危險的就是未知的風險,沒有人知道金融、網路、資金…下一步的動向是甚麼,而且由投資帶來的資產或利益、虧損也是沒有辦法提前知道。因此Jerry從在創投中得到的感想是:了解自己的底線,並且學習就算不知道答案也要繼續做下去。
新創公司能夠成功是因為找到了一個可以一直成功的方程式,這也跟學習或是人生一樣,很多事情都只是一個過程,做自己的CEO,為自己找到一個可以成功的方程式,而那個程式每個人都不一樣。
很多人總是說,出社會前的機會成本最低,因為我們不用負擔經濟上的壓力、又可以照著自己的意願探索外面的世界。這半年參加了很多很多活動,有時是個人喜好衝動報名、也有想要特別學習而參加社團,但是接踵而來的就是各式各異的活動或比賽,有時在報名的當下會質疑自己到底能不能勝任或負擔,這時風險就是如果參加很多可能會造成兩邊都沒有做好,賠了夫人又折兵、但參加了卻也有機會得到不一樣的收穫。
是否參加這麼多活動沒有絕對答案,我只告訴自己,參加與不參加都有各自的優缺點,只要願意去承擔各自帶來的收穫與風險,就照著自己的想法去做,因為只有不被他人影響的決定才不會後悔。
4. Experience versus newbie
When applied for the marketing intern of Buyer, Jerry found that there always exists conflict between experiences and newbies. While the newbie though has less experience then elders, they often have the newest ideas and enormous imagination and they can learn new skills fast.
We students sometimes have attitude among experience and newbie such like that we have paid great effort to enter our ideal university though exams or interviews. Consequently, we might consider ourselves mature enough in some fields. However, there is no limit and end in the world of knowledge that we should learn and improve ourselves every day to keep competitiveness.
Because we are all newbie when entering a new field, we have fresh ideas and creativity to inject new power to an enterprise; on the way we become experiences, we should accept the newbies’ suggestions. In the end, meeting various personalities of people can help us draw new things and let us become more better.
5. Barriers for good decision making: ego, blind spot
When starting a business, Jerry occurred that the most problem a boss perhaps has is that it is difficult for him or her to put down ego and ask for suggestions. In similarity, in the time we studying in school, we often were shy to ask questions to teachers and other excellent classmates because the egos. while it is clearly that we everybody has blind spot should be found by the outsider.
Hence, the 5th tip was so easy to understand that only to keep us as an empty glass can we fill more water of knowledge and abilities. We hope we can meet other people in interdisciplinary in order to get used to the fast-changed era.
Compare the 5th and 1st tip, they both motivate us to keep going forwards. We can base on our specific ability and use it to expand the range of learning in other professional knowledge. Because we are often blocked in some loop that we are too familiar with; in this situation, it is necessary to ask for help to others in order to pull us out of the blind spot.
6. Risk versus reward
After working in Mucker Capital, California, Jerry contact the traits of investment of the unknown revenue or loses of the investment. Because no one can predict the gain or loss of the money, it made him consider that only understanding the limit of your own and keep going forwards no matter the end will be.
The reason a company can success is because they have found the ‘’ successful function’’ of their enterprises. We can be the CEO of life and create or find a successful function especially for ourselves.
For example, I have participated lots of extra curriculum. Honestly, I sometimes feel afraid that I might do not well enough on those things since I did not have enough strength. However, I would gain new experiences when participate those activities, on the other hand, I might get different aftermath if I give up the chance.
Accordingly, I told myself to do what I want to do without worrying too much so that I would not be regrettable to what I have done because I do what I decided sine there are both pros and cons whether I join the extra curriculum or not.
